From the Fonix iSpeak settings screen:
Tap Speech Recognition Settings
Tap Noise Threshold
- Default 0. Options: 0, 50, 100, 150, 200, 250, 300, 400, 500.
- Increasing this value makes Fonix iSpeak less sensitive to surrounding noise, and may improve accuracy in noisy environments.
- Warning: If adjusted too high Fonix iSpeak may not hear your commands.
Tap Acceptance Threshold
- Default 65. Options: 50, 55, 60, 65, 70, 75, 80, 85, 100.
- This value represents the internal confidence number that Fonix iSpeak uses to determine if a recognition score was high enough to automatically dial the telephone number.
- Fonix iSpeak automatically calls a number when the recognition score is greater than the Acceptance Threshold.
- Setting this value higher may increase the number of confirmation prompts.
Tap Rejection Threshold
- Default 35. Options: 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40, 45, 50.
- This value is used in conjunction with the Acceptance Threshold described above. It represents the internal number that Fonix iSpeak uses to confirm or reject recognized results.
- If the internal recognition score is lower than the Acceptance Threshold but higher than the Rejection Threshold, Fonix iSpeak asks you to confirm the recognized result.
- If the internal recognition score is lower than the Rejection Threshold, Fonix iSpeak rejects the recognized result and returns to the previous menu.
Tap Leading Silence
- Default 3 seconds. Options: 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 and Infinite seconds.
- The allowed number of seconds between the time Fonix iSpeak starts to listen and you start to speak.
- Setting this value higher means Fonix iSpeak listens longer for you to speak before timing out.
Tap Trailing Silence
- Default 750 ms. Options: 250, 500, 750 1000, 1250, 1500, 1750, and 2000 ms.
- The allowed number of milliseconds after you quit speaking before Fonix iSpeak begins to process the audio.
Tap Max Record
- Default 5 seconds. Options: 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, and 10.
- The allowed number of seconds that Fonix iSpeak records audio.
Playback Recording
- Tap ON or OFF (toggle button).
- ON. Fonix iSpeak speaks back spoken commands.
- OFF. Fonix iSpeak does not repeat commands.
- Turn ON only if recognition accuracy is low.
Reset Defaults
- Tap ON or OFF (toggle button).
- ON. Sets the Recognition Settings to their default values when you start Fonix iSpeak.
- OFF. Keeps the current saved settings when you start Fonix iSpeak.
- The change occurs the next time you run Fonix iSpeak.

- Use an external headset microphone. Bluetooth microphones are not supported in Fonix iSpeak 1.0 due to limitations on the Apple iPhone. See Audio Route.
- Speak after the beep (not over the beep) and/or after you see the red microphone and blue volume bar on the Fonix iSpeak screen. If you speak too soon Fonix iSpeak may miss the beginning of your command.
- Make certain that the contact names are spelled correctly and do not contain symbols or numbers. Fonix iSpeak removes non-alphanumeric characters automatically, which could result in the incorrect association of a name and its pronunciation.
- Pronounce words clearly.
- Do not speak too slowly.
- Speak at your normal rate (not too fast, not too slow).
- Speak loudly but do not yell. If the blue sound level bar is barely moving you are speaking too softly. If it is completely filled in you are speaking too loudly.
- Remove rarely used names from the recognizer by adding a single dash ("-") as the first character on the first line of the contact "Note" field. Fonix iSpeak does not import contacts containing this symbol.
- Make sure that "First Name", "Last Name" and/or "Company Name" fields contain a name. If the primary names are put in the "Suffix" or "Middle" name fields, the recognizer will not use the correct name, or may ignore the contact completely.
- When Fonix iSpeak creates a recognition file it uses the first and last name fields, or the company name field when the first and last name fields are empty. Make sure these fields are properly filled in. Names composed entirely from symbols are omitted from the recognizer.
- Avoid leaving long pauses between words (see Trailing Silence). If Fonix iSpeak encounters a long pause, it will think you stopped talking and try to process a partial command.
- Saying commands in a crowded room where people are talking can make it difficult for Fonix iSpeak to distinguish your voice from others in the background. The same is true for other noisy environments where loud spikes in noise occur. For more reliable results try moving to a less noisy environment. See also Noise, Acceptance and Rejection thresholds under Recognition Settings.
For best results with digit dialing:
- Use a headset microphone. See Audio Route.
- Use the loud Speaker at the bottom of the iPhone. See Audio Route.
Device and sound quality issues:
- Prompts are quiet when Audio Route is set to the loud Speaker at the bottom of the iPhone. This is due to limitations on the iPhone.
- Fonix iSpeak runs slower on the original iPhone.
- Microphone quality is lower, which may result in lower recognition performance.
Fonix iSpeak says, "I didn't understand you."
- Are you speaking loud enough?
- Are you speaking clearly?
- Is there too much background noise?
- Did you pronounce the name exactly as it appears in your address book?
- Have you tried using the headset?
Fonix iSpeak says, "I didn't hear you."
- Are you speaking too softly?
- Are you speaking too soon after the beep?
- Does the blue sound level bar barely move when you speak (you are speaking too softly)?
- Does the blue sound level bar fill the bar (you're speaking too loudly)?
What if recognition lags or Fonix iSpeak takes a long time starting up?
- Remove infrequently called contacts by adding a single dash ("-") as the first character on the first line of the contact "Notes" field. Fonix iSpeak ignores contacts with a dash in the "Notes" field.
- Afterwards, update your contact list manually if you have more than 300 names in your address book. See Update Contacts.
- Removing contacts you don't need speeds up the recognition process and makes Fonix iSpeak run faster.
- Speed up the overall call process by setting Audio Prompts to "Reduce Prompts" or "No Prompts."
What if I say a company name and Fonix iSpeak brings up the information for a different contact?
- Fonix iSpeak searches the "First Name" and "Last Name" fields first. If the name is not found, it searches the "Company" name field.
- If you have multiple contacts with the same company name and one or more of those contacts does not have a first and last name, Fonix iSpeak may not identify the right company. The best solution is to make sure you have a first and last name for every contact.
To experience the best recognition results:
- Use a headset microphone. See Audio Route.
- Use the loud Speaker at the bottom of the iPhone. See Audio Route.
Fonix iSpeak asks you to confirm too many commands that it recognized correctly.
- Try lowering the Acceptance Threshold.
- Try lowering the Rejection Threshold.
Move the Fonix iSpeak icon to the bottom icon bar of your iPhone home screen.
- Press and hold your finger on the Fonix iSpeak icon until all the icons begin jiggling.
- Lift your finger off the screen, then drag your iPhone icon from the bottom Spring Board bar to the home screen area.
- Drag the Fonix iSpeak icon to the bottom Spring Board where the iPhone icon was originally located.
